Manufacturer Description

When Sir Thomas Scrope arrives in Bristol (Bristow) in March 1574 the city is riven by conflict, with merchant and craftsman locked in a bitter power struggle fought out in the council chamber.
The ban on Spanish trade is crippling the Bristow economy. A vital treaty lifting the embargo will be signed by the queen as the climax of her visit.
Spain is preparing its “first armada” whose purpose, it is feared, is an invasion of England. The most ferocious army in the world, led by the ruthless Duke of Alba, waits less than thirty miles from the English coast. An Irish rebellion has left large numbers of heavily armed soldiers and deserters mixing uneasily with the Bristow townsfolk during the great St Bartholomew’s fair.
Several see Thomas’s presence as a threat. He is watched and followed. He meets wealthy merchants and a very attractive, headstrong step-daughter.
Scrope becomes involved in civil uprising, kidnapping, assault, assassination, intrigue, murder and betrayal while being ambushed, stabbed, blown-up and ruined financially.
Last but not least, he faces the disapproval of his sister-in-law.
Drawn unwillingly into a conspiracy to strike “four mighty blows” against Protestantism, England and Queen Elizabeth in the historic week long pageant celebrating the Queen’s visit, the knight must play one faction off against another if he is to survive long enough to complete his mission.
But whose side is he really on?
